Mr and Mrs JJ Moubray of Naemoor Estate were, it is believed, travelling through the village of Powmill in their carriage in the late 1890s when their journey coincided with local children leaving Sunday School from the old village hall. The Moubrays stopped and counted upwards of 70 children. The following day they committed to build a new hall for the benefit of the local community. In keeping with their promise the land was purchased and the current hall constructed using only locally sourced materials of stone wood and brick and avoiding industrial materials like iron and steel.
Moubray Hall is situated at the heart of Powmill village and has been a focal point for residents from the Fossoway Community and the surrounding area since its construction in the year 1910.
Managed for over half a century by local members of the Scottish Women’s Rural Institute the Hall has recently undergone a change in role with the formation of a committee of volunteers from the village.
